Oleksandr Leonov

is a pianist recognized for his refined artistry and expressive depth. His interpretations are marked by deep reflection, emotional sincerity, and an immersive poetic quality that invites the listener into an intimate musical dialogue. From an early stage of his career, he was described as “one of the most promising talents on the Ukrainian piano scene.”

The Path
to the Stage

Born on 12 July 1996 in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, Leonov gave his first public performances at the age of seven. During his formative years in Kyiv, where he studied at the R. Glier Music Institute under Yuliana Yablonska, he repeatedly won national Ukrainian piano competitions, establishing himself early on as one of the most promising young artists of his generation. In recognition of his artistic achievements, he was awarded the Presidential Scholarship of Ukraine. Since 2018, he has been among the artists of the Vere Music Fund, an organization dedicated to supporting outstanding young musicians.

Since 2020, Leonov has continued his studies at the Music Academy Basel (FHNW) with Claudio Martínez Mehner and Filippo Gamba. This new chapter allowed him to immerse himself in the European pianistic tradition, broadening his artistic perspective and refining his individual voice. The dialogue between his Ukrainian musical roots and the European school of interpretation has become an essential part of his artistic identity, deepening both the structural clarity and expressive nuance of his playing.

Aesthetic vision

Rather than treating performance as display, he approaches the stage as a space of concentration and honesty — where music becomes a living story. Critics have noted that at the piano he is “not a rigid technician, but a truly grown musician with great expressive power and sensitivity” (Rotary Club).

A distinctive quality of Leonov’s artistry is his ability to shape a narrative arc within a musical cycle or even a single work. He unfolds each composition as a coherent story, revealing its internal dramaturgy and emotional progression. As Dr. Berndt Herrmann observed, Leonov becomes “a musical storyteller.”

Through this approach, the listener is invited into a deeper musical experience — one that extends beyond tonal colors and pianistic brilliance. His performances resonate with meaning, allowing audiences not only to hear the music, but to carry its emotional and philosophical depth with them long after the final note.

Awards and honours

His artistic path has been shaped by significant international distinctions: Third Prize and two Special Prizes at the International Horowitz Piano Competition (Kyiv, 2017), the Yamaha Scholarship (2016–2017), participation in the Chicago International Piano Competition (2020), victory at the Competition for the Final Concert of the Music Academy Basel (2022), and the prestigious Kiefer Hablitzel Award (2024).

His concert activity spans Switzerland, Germany, Ukraine, and France, with appearances in prestigious venues such as Salle Cortot in Paris, the White Hall in Bad Kissingen, the Lysenko National Philharmonic in Kyiv, and the Rathaussaal in Pfaffenhofen.

As a soloist, he has collaborated with leading ensembles including the National Academy Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and the Student Orchestra of the R. Glier Music Institute.

Leonov has also been featured at notable international festivals, among them Variations Musicales de Tannay, the Menuhin Festival Gstaad, the Elpida Festival in Neuchâtel, LvivMozArt in Lviv, and the Book Arsenal Festival in Kyiv.
